Old Save Files: Floppy Disks

I was looking through some old art files and found this:
Name that game!

And then it got me thinking about how old this is. Does anyone still use floppy diskettes? Perhaps some of you are too young to remember this memory storage, but you may recognize it as the Save Game icon we used for many of our games.

Now, with our new User Interface (UI), the old-fashioned diskette is gone, replaced by an ornate classy Nancy Drew menu seen in Tomb of the Lost Queen. As a long-term fan, I much prefer the vintage/modern mixed look that I would describe the new UI as. Diskettes are cute and all, but they are rather...square. And fun to draw:

Grr, I confronted my top two egg culprits today. Practically attacked them, but not really. And while both of them continue to deny being a part of it, one of them still thinks there are two egg culprits involved. This person, who I highly think is responsible for at least the chocolate egg, was rather diverting in his answers when I questioned him. Still, this really could mean multiple egg culprits... And I dare them to try placing another egg! My skills are weakening! I would like to request to drop down to the Amateur/Junior level in this mystery....if that could happen. Another clue to re-gain his or her fame on this blog, and throughout the office would put this mystery back on track, because sadly, this case is going cold.

As for the weekend puzzle, bravo to the sleuths who cracked it! The solution is a [rail fence cipher], and after discovering the letters, re-arrange the words to form this riddle: [Why did Nancy chase the chicken across the road? To get the hidden Easter Egg!]. Voila!

Hahaha Funny! Oh and the floppy disc is from Message in a Haunted Mansion!!!! One of my faves! I've never had to use a floppy disc (I'm only 13) but I found some that my Mom had when she was in collage! They were very colorful;-)

Guess what???? I just set up my printer and I printed out my COPPA form. My mom and I already filled it out but my dad has to come look at it as well. But get this! Today I thought about looking at our new local library (it's new to US) and it is HUGE!!!!!! So, I assumed (since it has CD-ROM) that it would have ND games, and guess what??? IT HAD THE WHOLE SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I leaped with so much joy (well except for TMB and ALI)

Are we supposed to say where that floppy disk thing came from? Well, if we want to be technical, it came from whoever artistically designed it, but I don't think that's the answer you're looking for! ;)

In all seriousness, I think it was Charlie's from Message in a Haunted Mansion. I kept trying to make it work in Louis' computer, but to this day I cannot figure it out!

I'm not entirely sure, but I'm guessing that the floppy disk is from the original Secrets can Kill.

Haha! I haven't seen a floppy drive for forever!
I believe that floppy drive is from the Message in the Haunted Mansion (which by the way is a very good game!). I think we might have some lying around our house... :)

It seems like yesterday when the floppy drive icon to save was new... I still remember playing the older Nancy Drew games (in order) and then playing the first Nancy drew with the (now older) UI. I can't remember when you guys brought that in.. but I totally agree with you! I like the new UI better!
You should have heard me "oohing and ahhing" while playing the Tomb of the Lost Queen! :)
Can't wait for Nancy Drew #27!

It is Charlie's floppy disk from Message in a Haunted Mansion. I think I was born right after they stopped using those because I don't remember using them but I do remember knowing about them at a young age.

I think you should plant an egg on the multiple egg culprits! And then test and see what's there reaction! Or try to get it out of them!

MHM! :D

Hehehe,I had to laugh as I read your blog post. I'm a 15 year old, but I still use floppy diskettes. ;)
I have a WIN 95 (I love the older Windows operating systems. ^_^)computer that I use primarily just for writing text files and stuff, and the only way of exporting my files is via floppy.
(I haven't gotten any new floppies in years, though. Do they even still make them? Hmm, I will have to check up on that, because my existing floppies will break or wear out eventually...)

We love your blog posts, by the way! They're much appreciated. :-)

Ah, floppy disks! I remember those pretty well. :) That one is Charlie's disk from MHM, I believe. Well, as much as I loved the old user interface, I'm glad it didn't have a picture of a CD for the save button.

I also liked how the UI was slightly different for each of the older games. My only woe was that while you're having a conversation with a character, you couldn't move your "magnifying glass" outside of the dialog box, which meant no saving in the middle of an important conversation. :(

Good luck with your egg mystery!!

I was so used to seeing that little image since I was 9 years old that I never thought about what it was! No I've never used a floppy disc, we used to have some around when we got our first computer in 2000 or 2001 but then we threw them away since they were never used.

You're such a good artist Little Jackalope! What's you're REAL name anyway? Have you ever told us? Does anybody know? Is it Her Interactive's best kept secret? ;)

Yeah, the new menu was really classy. My brother loved it (he's new to the ND games) but I didn't like it too much. Sure it was nice not to hear Nancy's long 'center of operations' speech. But I missed the fun-ness of seeing a scrapbook, along with souvenirs from past games. Like you said that little icon was fun. Brings back happy ND-playin' memories. 'Wish they could update the new interface with a little of that.

Ooh the diskette is from Message in a Haunted Mansion, it was Charlie's.
Aw, too bad about the egg mystery. Hope you catch the culprit soon, this has been going on a while.

Hey! Isn't that from the Message in a haunted mansion game?

My Dad used to use those all the time. I think we still have a bunch of blank ones somewhere. You should place your own egg in your drawer and then tell everybody and watch for reactions.

From me,

About the Txt Challenge, I was wondering IF we win, do we find out on the 13th, or do we find out before then and you post it everywhere on the 13th?

Thanks!

Message in a Haunted Mansion, funny... I just finished that game in Senior Detective last week. The term paper was about the great Christmas robbery. Charlie the handyman was writing it.

The Floppy Disk is from secret of the scarlet hand

Hey everyone! Most of you were correct, this specific floppy disk was from Message in a Haunted Mansion. Later games have different writing on the disks.

@Nancy Drew Forever1929 -- There certainly a lot of colorful, fun looking floppy disks, I agree!

@krazy rabbit 23 -- Cool! Looks like you've got some game time to plan ahead for, now!

@Anonymous -- Right and right! It did come from an artist here...and it was put in MHM. ;)

@Dedicated Nancy Drew Gamer -- Yay! We are glad you like the new UI. our Creative Director worked really hard on it. :)

@Bryce Hitchcock -- Yep, the floppy is getting so old, that our younger audience might not know what it even means...o.O

@Teagpow -- I like your thinking! I just might do something sneaky like that...but maybe when I discover who the real culprits are...

@Thenwink -- Hooray for you! You are holding onto something that will soon be called "vintage". ^.^ And yes, I believe they still make them, but they are just harder to find. :/

(And thanks for reading! We love hearing from you!)

Thanks @ComicalCrafty!

Why thank you, @Hannah (Drew Detective)! My real name is still a mystery to everyone...o.O

Thanks @ILUVNANCY!!! Yeah, it's been going on for almost two months! Never fear! Little Jackalope is determined to solve this mystery! ~.^

I never used floppy disks, but my older sisters did. My dad got them out the other day to show them to me.
I was just wondering the other day about your egg mystery. Hope you find the culprit soon!
