Is HER Interactive providing good-quality pictures/templates/fonts of the currently available game covers? Also, what format should the entry be in?

Bianca said...

may we use screen shots from the games to make our cover? and can we use the nancy drew logo?

Novel_Sleuth said...

@ wodedrawling - Unfortunately we're unable to provide any assets for building the covers. Because of the limitations this may impose, we're more interested in concept than rendered quality. So as not to create a deficit upon those without access to expensive illustration materials/programs. As for format, any will do, .jpg, .tga, .png, etc. We'll accept anything we can open.

@ Bianca - you may certainly use screen shots from the games, as well as the Nancy Drew logo.

Hope this helps!

can we use a conmputer to design the cover? I am hopless when it comes to drawing.

What if I don't have a phone? Can I still enter, but minus the phone #?

Hi, I know that the rules said we can use any medium we have to create the cover, but because it's not exactly a traditional way to color, would it be okay if we say, drew our cover, scanned it, and colored it on the computer, like with a painting program? Or should we stick specifically with traditional mediums like crayons, colored pencils, etc.? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Anonymous said...

What does it mean by saying we need to include permission to post it online? Do you we just say that we give HER permission in the email? Oh, and can we like draw the picture and then scan it onto the computer?

I was wondering, do we just take a photo of the cover we made, and email to HI ?

Allie-oop said...

If we're to use crayons or markers and the like, how are we to email it to you? I know I don't have a scanner.

Anonymous said...

Are two people allowed to collaborate on this, or does it have to be a solo effort?

Novel_Sleuth said...

Wow, lots of questions! I'm going to handle them in order of receiving. So bear with me.

@anon - "can we use a computer to design the cover?"
Absolutely!

@anon - "What if I don't have a phone?"
Not a problem, we just usually require more than one point of contact, in this case a phone# is easiest. If not, just make sure your email address is not blocking us (in case you win!)

@anon - "...colored it on the computer, like with a painting program? Or should we stick specifically with traditional mediums like crayons, colored pencils, etc.?"
You can use a computer, or paint, or a combination of both!

@anon - "Do you we just say that we give HER permission in the email? Oh, and can we like draw the picture and then scan it onto the computer?"
If you win, we'd like to showcase your work online (the blog, etc.) to do so you just need to include text with your submission that says (basically) "I grant you permission to show my work." You can most definitely draw and scan. However you choose to create the work is up to you.

@Kim - You may collaborate on a cover! As for the tandem photo you should be okay. Our artists have room for only one picture, so as long as you both are in it, we can make it work.

@Darren - Sure thing! The contest is open to all residents of Earth. ^.~

@anon - "How can I get the nancy drew logo?"
Unfortunately we're not providing any assets for the contest. However you could always trace one from a box, cut one out from a printed copy, or digitally crop it from an online image. ^>^

I'm going to break up the responses into a second comment.

Okay, next set:

@kyli - You bet, we'd love it if you made up your own!

@serena - Please do enter. Australia, France, Antarctica, anywhere; the contest is open to all.

@anon - "I was wondering, do we just take a photo of the cover we made, and email to HI ?"
Sure, that's probably the fastest way to get it to us. I suppose you could use "snail-mail" if you wish. We're aware that many people will not be creating on a computer, nor do they have access to scanner, so snapping a photo and emailing it will probably be the norm. ^.^

@allie-oop - You can mail it to us through the post office, or you can take a photo and email it. Either option is fine.

@anon - Feel free to collaborate! If you win however you can only submit one photograph.

Good luck to everyone!

Answering more questions:

@anon - "Do I use the same name that the game is? or change it?"
You should try and keep the same name, that way we know what game you intended your cover to be for.

@luke - you can email your entry to us at HIcontest@herinteractive.com

@anon - "On the 'Dare to Play' blog the deadline is written as the fifteenth, but here it says the fifth. Which date is correct?"
The D2P blog is incorrect, the final day is Friday the 5th. We'll be sure to change it. Thanks!

@anon - "do we draw it or do we do it on a computer?"
You can do either or both! How you create it is up to you.

@anon - "do we make a new cover or copy one?"
That's up to you. Mostly we're looking for creativity and presentation. If you want to re-create one of our own covers that's fine, but you can also make an entirely new one!

@anon - "where can you get these papers so that you can color them at?"
Unfortunately we're unable to provide any assets to help you create the covers. You're more than welcome to find images online or make photo copies of games you own. But keep in mind that it isn't necessary to use any elements from our covers. We'd love to see what you can come up with!

Novel_Sleuth said...

I'm breaking these questions in half.

@anon - "are we designing trail of the twister or any other one we want?"
You can pick any one of the currently released 21 PC titles, unfortunately TOT is not allowed.

@anon - "How are we supposed to create a cover? Are we supposed to go to a special website, or use a special program or something?"
To create the cover you can draw your own or you can scan in one of ours and manipulate it with digital software, or you can create one out of a bunch of photos. However you'd like to make it is up to you. Part of this contest is about the creativity involved in making your own cover.

@Molly - you can wait to submit your picture until you are chosen as the winner.

@anon - "If we trace artwork or use photos/artwork we find on the computer, etc., should we credit the initial creator in our piece?"
Yes, if you use copyrighted material (that is not HI's) then please credit the creator.

@anon - "If I were to design the cover on the computer, what kind of software would be the best to use? Hopefully something along the lines of Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, etc.?"
I would say the best thing to use would be whatever program you know the best. Since you can determine what tools you use to build the cover, you should pick something you enjoy, or something you're familiar with (for the sake of ease.)

@Gegee - You may only pick one of the 21 currently released PC titles or one of the two currently released Dossier titles.

@anon - "Do we have to pick a PC game? Or can it be a nintendo Nancy Drew game?"
Unfortuately if must be a PC game, sorry. >.<

@Darienne - try to be creative with your concept, this contest was designed with the knowledge that there would be disparities of artist talent between entrants, therefore we've slated to have the work judged on a variety of levels.

@allie-oop - you can mail it to:
Her Interactive Contests
c/o Her Interactive
1150 114th Ave SE, Suite 200
Bellevue, WA 98004
Make sure that it arrives before the 5th of February though!

@allie-oop - I belive what I mean was it isn't necessary to use things like the HI logo or Nancy Drew silhouette. In fact I encourage you to create your own logos and title treatment.

@anon - "If we're re-designing it on a computer, where are we suppose to make it at?"
If you are using a computer, you may use an programs you wish to create the cover.

Next half coming up soon.

Aaaaand part 2 of questions:

@anon - "How will we be contacted if we win? and What do you mean by 'your picture placed in the next game, Trail of the Twister'? How will it appear in the game?"
If you win, we'll attempt to contact you by phone # if you provided it, or email if you didn't. If you win you're allowed to submit to us one portrait photo (though it doesn't have to be of you.) We'll take the picture and place it in the game somewhere, like in a magazine Nancy can read, or a picture on a nightstand.

@anon - "are we allowed to design one for trail of the twister?"
Unfortunately no. Since TOT has yet to be released even we don't know what the cover will look like. You may use any of the currently available 21 PC games or two Dossier Series games.

@anon - "will we be able to see other people's designs?"
We're hoping to post the winners when the contest has been completed.

@PinkPantherette - Nope. There are no real size restrictions to the contest. Though more detail certainly wouldn't hurt. :P

@anon - "Does the 1'st winner also recieve a free game? Or is it just the runners up?"
Though it isn't stated in the release, I'm pretty sure we'll be giving the winner a game as well. ^.^

@anon - "Can I make an A4 sheet size cover? Or does it have to be the same size as the games' front covers?"
Sure! Standard page size is fine with us. Mostly we'd just like the cover to be readable, but beyond that it can be whatever size you'd like.

@anon - "are we allowed to design one for trail of the twister?"
I hate to say it but, no, a submission for TOT will not be accepted. We would like for you to choose any of our other 23 PC games (21 adventure, 2 Dossier)

@anon - "What exactly does it mean when they say they will put our picture in the ND game? I am looking forward to the game. What is it about?"
Well, if you win you can submit a photo of you or someone else and we'll stick it in the final version of the game. The photograph will generally appear in a periodical or in frame somewhere in the adventure. As for what TOT is about, I'm not certain if we've released a synopsis just yet, but I'm sure the MB is all a buzz with ideas!

@anon - "If two people work together on one will they both recive the credit?"
Basically yes. If you do, make sure to include both your names on the submission. Also the winner can only submit one photograph, so make sure that you remember to take it together. >.~

@top hat - Ya know, I don't think anyone's ever asked that! I don't see why not. Though I guess it would be fairly important to know what the drawing is of before we allowed it.(it has to work with the context of the locations we've chosen.) I say shoot for the moon!

Ok, that looks about good. ^.^

(Like a few more words to it.)

Novel_Sleuth said...

You've got questions, Novel's got answers!

@anon - "...or do I think of it as a cover that isn't on a game yet, that's strictly Nancy Drew related?"
It isn't necessary to include those bits unless you want to. Those are required for actual packaging, but for the purposes of this contest we don't require them.

@anon - "I was wondering how do you like do it? Do you draw? Do you have to do something on the computer? "
You can pick any method you want. If you want to use a computer to do it digitally, you can! If you want to draw it by hand, that's great! Any way you can come up with to create a cover for one of our games is perfect.

@ryan - "How old do you have to be to enter?"
You can be any age, there are no restrictions.

@anon - "when you pick a winner, will you actually use the winner's cover (as in will you replace the cover now with the winner's design?)"
Unfortunately no. Your new design will not be replacing the actual cover, sorry. We will however display it proudly on the blog for all to see!

@anon - "Are we allowed to take a photo and use that instead of having to design something?"
Sure, photos are completely acceptable, just make sure you add titles to help us identify the game. :P

@raindropsNroses - "I was wondering if there would be a way to view all of the entrys at the end of the contest?"
Unfortunately we won't be able to display all of them, as we've received a great deal of entries and don't have the time or resources to post all of them. Sorry. >.<

@anon - "can I use the computer to make the design or do I have to do make it using art materials? Can I used editing programs like paint?"
If you would like to use a computer to help, then you are more than welcome to. ^.^ Feel free to use any software at your disposal to help you create the best cover you possibly can!

@anon - "If you end up winning a game, can it be a TOT preorder?"
Unfortunately no. We can only offer games that we currently have available, sorry.

@anon - "Will the winners first name appear with the picture in the game? or just the picture."
In the game only your picture will appear, it will not be accompanied with a name.

@gabcudsia - "can we do a cover for the new nancy drew or just the games that have already come out?"
You may only do a cover for games that have already come out. Designing a cover for TOT is unfortunately not allowed.

@Lucia - "Is it okay to ask what the judging criteria will be?"
Certainly, though I can only give you a idea. Judging will be based on creativity/originality of concept, execution of concept, and relevance of concept to game. Also these don't necessarily count evenly.

@anon - "Is it ok to use screenshots from the game that we redesign to make our cover and then add words to it for the title?"
You bet! That sounds like a very effective way to do it!

@anon - "can i enter if i live in Mexico (tijuana)?"
Si! El concurso es para todo el gente en el mundo! And given that my spanish is pretty bad, let's just say; "anyone, anywhere can enter."

@anon - "What are the drawings going to be judged based on? And you know how the Nancy Drew PC covers have a caption? Well are we suppose to add that and can we add a little more too it?"
Judging (as above) is based on creativity/originality, production, and effectiveness. You may remove the captions or add to them, the choice is yours. ^.^

Good luck everyone!

Answering more posts.

@Olivia - "If we are sending via snail mail, do they need to be postmarked by Feb. 5th or at HeR offices by then?"
It needs to be at our offices by Feb. 5th.

@zt2addict - "So when someone wins the contest, how will their picture be showed? Will it be in the game, where you can see it while playing, or will it be a cover? Oh, and it doesn't have to be about Trail of the Twister?"
The picture will appear somewhere in the game, like perhaps in a magazine Nancy can read. The cover will not be used in the game at all, sorry. Also the cover you design should not be about Trail of the Twister. Designs entered for TOT will be disqualified.

@anon - "Do the runner-ups also get their pictures( of themselves and the design) posted? Can I write my name at the corner of the paper? so it can be seen if i win. If you are a runner-up, how will you get the game of our choice to us? do we include our address on the email? What does RAN mean?"
The runners up will have their entries posted along with the winner. You may certainly write your name at the corner, just be sure that it doesn't detract from the actual cover art. ^.~ If you are a runner up, we will mail you a copy of a game you choose. You will be contacted for that information if you win, so you do not need to include it with your entry. RAN stands for Ransom of the Seven Ships.

@anon - "Am I allowed to use the logo that is in the opening sequence for a logo on my cover? Example: When Warnings At Waverly Academy first comes on, and it plays the music, and it shows the title and the picture of waverly academy..like, am I allowed to use that title photo? Are we allowed to put the culprit of the game in our entry?"
Yup, you can certainly use the title photo! You may use the culprit on the cover, as long as you don't identify him/her as being the villain.

@anon - "I was wondering if my friend and i could create one together and submit it together as one drawing?"
Yup, you can collaborate with a friend if you so choose.

@anon - "I'm having trouble emailing my entry. It's a jpg file but not that large. I've tried both of my email accounts but it keeps coming back saying it is undeliverable. Is the HI in the email address supposed to be in capitals? Did anyone else have difficulty?"
Unfortunately tech support is not really my forte. If you mail webmaster@herinteractive.com about your issues, they may be able to give you a hand. I haven't heard of many people having issues, but maybe that's part of the problem. :P

@anon - "Does the picture have to be really detailed?"
Nope. That is an aspect completely left in your hands. Artistically, as long as your concept supports it, your final piece can have very little detail and be just as powerful as even the most intricately detailed drawing.

@anon - "What happens if we send you the same thing twice?"
Hopefully the judge notices that it is a duplication and removes one. If you've intentionally entered two different pieces, we'll use the last one we received, and will disqualify the original.

Good luck!
