Finding Hidden Compartments

Some of you have already noticed, but we posted a new video to our YouTube channel on Saturday! It's the start of a new series where we share with you real-life tips and examples on how to be like Nancy Drew, or to put "Drew" as a verb, "How to Nancy Drew".

We already have a short list that includes picking locks, finding secret rooms, and dusting for fingerprints, but we are always up for suggestions! Comment to this post below (or in the Blogs & Tweets forum on the message boards) with any and all ideas of the different Nancy Drew skills we could show you. What sort of things does Nancy do while on a case?

On another note, it looks like several of you correctly identified the weekend puzzle in the previous post, which says [New old character]. This is a reference to next game, and the discussions, comments and rumors I see are fun! Some guesses are valid, but it isn't the exact *someone* I'm secretly referring to. Another guesser is spot on.

There is something we do/do not do when building up the suspense. Might I suggest looking at GTH and SPY again? Something is either there or totally not there...

Does this make any sense? I hope not, because whatever I'm talking about is still a secret!

Blog Video! (And Weekend Puzzle #217)

I've been up to some mischief lately...making a silly video of sorts. For your entertainment:

Ah yes, remembering all those good times. The times when you first played a scary Nancy Drew game and experienced near-fake-heart-attacks, screaming, startling reactions, gasping, and flailing arms. Ah yes. I've personally played all of the games several times. So many times that I've gotten used to each scare element.

Although, the instances that are randomized still startle me from time to time. Which of these games below do you still need to play?

#3 - Message in a Haunted Mansion
#7 - Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake
#11 - Curse of Blackmoor Manor
#17 - Legend of the Crystal Skull
#19 - The Haunting of Castle Malloy
#23 - Shadow at the Water's Edge
#24 - The Captive Curse
#28 - Ghost of Thornton Hall

Puzzle time! Let's see if you can understand my ancient language here...
Need help? Travel to April 26th, the year of The Captive Curse.

We have a couple birthdays, too!

Who is Nancy Drew?

According to me, everyone who plays a Nancy Drew game can claim to be "Nancy Drew", since they take on her character role. Therefore, anybody can suddenly burst into this song that we posted a while back:

Due to several requests, we are posting the lyrics and chords! Perhaps this is your opportunity to perform for a YouTube video, yes? We'd love to see how many "Nancy Drew"s will sing this song!

Guitar Chords:
Capoed on 5: Am, E, F, G
With no capo: Em, B, C, D

"I'm Nancy Drew" song lyrics:

Verse 1
In my line of work it’s fun and games
when new mysteries come my way.
When friends need help, they call me in
So I can track down their dark villain.
At times the case usually seeks me out,
Trouble comes, what’s that about?
These things have logical explanations…
Let’s find them out cause I want my vacation!

Chorus
Add this to my resume,
I’m Nancy Drew, I hope you’ve heard of me.
I solve the case every time;
I find the treasure and stop all crime.
Don’t try to hide, ‘cause it won’t work.
I’m comin’ for ya, you dirty crook!

Verse 2
I’ve rescued friends, learned Morse code,
Frozen to death, and blew up a boat!
I’ve danced on stage, and climbed up cliffs,
Worn a disguise, and caught some fish.
When the truth gets close, the culprits get closer,
And danger lurks around every corner.
Snooping is my specialty,
Searching through stuff that doesn’t belong to me.

Chorus
Add this to my resume,
I’m Nancy Drew, I hope you’ve heard of me. (What?!)
I solve the case every time;
I find the treasure and stop all crime.
Don’t try to hide, ‘cause it won’t work.
I’m comin’ for ya, you dirty crook!

Verse 3
I’ve been shocked, stung, attacked and eaten,
Suffocated, drowned, poisoned, bitten,
Hit over the head a countless number of times,
But don’t worry, I always seem to be fine...
I’ve jet packed across the old country,
Can understand French, German, Italian and Cockney,
Snuck into meetings and into locked rooms,
But no matter where I go I can’t catch Sonny Joon!

Chorus
Add this to my resume,
I’m Nancy Drew, I hope you’ve heard of me. (What?!)
I solve the case every time;
I find the treasure and stop all crime.
Don’t try to hide, ‘cause it won’t work.
I’m comin’ for ya, you dirty crook!

Verse 4
Monsters and villains may try to stop me,
And ghosts and creatures aren’t THAT scary!
Reading my journal for clues and notes,
I’m packing my bags and grabbing my coat.
There may be tricks, troubles, and trials ahead,
But I get help from Bess, George and Ned.
Twenty-seven cases in my past I have solved,
Now I’m off to hunt the Ghost of Thornton Hall.

Chorus
Add this to my resume,
I’m Nancy Drew, I hope you’ve heard of me. (What?!)
I solve the case every time;
I find the treasure and stop all crime.
Don’t try to hide, ‘cause it won’t work.
I’m comin’ for ya, you dirty crook!

Here is the remaining answers to last weekend's puzzle. It looks like a few of you got some correct!

Getting Ready for Ghosts!

I wish I could say that I'm caught up on the Scary Games Marathon, but I'm not. Tonight we finish up playing Shadow at the Water's Edge (of which I got terribly distracted with trying to solve all of the puzzles from Rentaro...as well as playing Pachinko at the parlor over and over and over again to get all the prizes). This weekend I will play the latest "scary game": The Captive Curse! If you are waiting for your pre-ordered copy of Ghost of Thornton Hall, is there a Nancy Drew game you would play before receiving the latest mystery?

Or if you are too impatient to sit down to replay an old game, check out this video we posted today on YouTube!

Oh no! SPOILERS?! Just a head's up to everyone, if you pre-ordered Ghost of Thornton Hall physical BONUS EDITION, your game has likely already been shipped out, or will on Monday. You will have access to download the strategy guide as soon as it ships, but keep in mind that the guides NEVER reveal who the culprit is, so the only spoilers you would get from it are how to solve the puzzles, as well as critical story points.

Speaking of spoilers, while some people will receive their game early, there is that chance that a few will spoil game content on the Message Boards or on Facebook, Twitter, or other web sites. If you have your heart set on not seeing any spoiler content, you may want to stay offline for a bit. (Don't worry, I will not reveal anything big here...but I may warn you about little things and then put it in spoiler code). XD

Here's a little extra weekend fun for your to ponder over:

And we have a few birthdays to celebrate!

Have a spooktackular weekend everyone!

Halloween Video!

As hinted at earlier, I have been working on a little video (hence the late-night blog posts this past week!) With the help of several HI team members (and permission from a few others) we present this fun little video! How many references to the Nancy Drew games can you find and count?

By the way, there are several fun behind-the-scenes fun facts about this video production, and I will be sure to share it here with all of my favorite people: you amazing blog readers, of course! XD If you like the video, log in to YouTube and give us a thumbs up. If you didn't like it, well...you can give us a thumbs down....and I will be ok with that. (*Cries jackalope-sized jackalope tears*).

Head's up! Tomorrow's weekend puzzle will be a contest! That's right! There will be a small prize at stake, so come back to participate. ;)

Creating Videos

I've been busying away at our next Amateur Sleuth Blog video (there is a good chance it will be posted on Friday...but, we shall see!) And this one features an interview with a small celebrity here in our office. Hint: it is a guy. Who would you guess him to be? (~.^) Stay tuned for the video upload to our YouTube Channel!

The Characters of The Deadly Device

There is too much excitement to mention and fit all in today's blog title, so I chose the most important and fitting. XD

Today we sent out a newsletter covering all of today's updates (which I'm about to mention anyway). If you haven't yet, you can subscribe to our newsletters here.

There is still a sale going on for The Captive Curse (digital only) using promo code BAVARIA12 to get 50% off of your purchase. (Sale ends Monday, October 1st, at 11:59PM PST). It's a great game to get in time for Halloween.

Speaking of Halloween and the festive season, our new announcement today is the new contest going on! Pre-order The Deadly Device on or before October 16th to become automatically entered to win a Nancy Drew costume! How cool is it to dress up as Nancy Drew? (Or if you are a guy, maybe the Hardy boys?)

If you have already pre-ordered The Deadly Device, you have already been entered, so no worries! ;)

Most importantly, I uploaded a new video today! I am talking to you about the characters from, you guessed it, The Deadly Device. It's only from my perspective, and I promise I won't give any spoilers away. And be sure to subscribe to our channel so that you'll get sent a note saying we've uploaded a new video. Enjoy!

I did not forget about the weekend puzzle. It's here. (~_^)

Video Blog #01: The Deadly Device Pre-Orders

Today I posted my first video blog on our YouTube Channel, under the new playlist "Amateur Sleuth Blog". It's also available in HD, which you can watch as an option. This video is me pretty much giving you the low-down on this week's news. Check it out!

Hmm...Videos? I think yes!

Today I've been working on collecting video clips and screenshots from The Deadly Device. These shots of me playing the game and interacting with the characters will be used for the official trailer that will be put together by one of our fantastic artists. Our Writer and Designer provided the narration by Nancy and offered a helpful VO (voice-over) selection from the game to use. Our Marketing Director helped provide the script, so next it goes to our artist who will study the script and pieces together the visuals and music.

Hey! Have you noticed? On the right I added a poll question! I think it would be fun to have a new poll each week, starting on Tuesdays or so, 'cause I'm curious to hear your thoughts and opinions. ;) Check it out on the right of the blog! --->

Also, I had a thought. Our summer intern, Phoenix, inspired this idea. You know how she had a Video Blog on our YouTube Channel? I'm thinking it might fun to give it a try; it would be kind of like how I write this blog, but in video form, and I would announce everything that's been going on... and talk briefly about Nancy Drew stuff...and there would be more pictures... Your thoughts? :-/

Weekend Puzzle #123 + 3 Videos!

It's Friday, and we have a few videos to share with you! Check them out!

First of all, Phoenix interviewed Nancy Drew! Although since we don't ever show Nancy Drew's face in our games, all you see is Nancy's silhouette. Take a listen:

And then Phoenix got to interview the voice actress of Nancy Drew: Lani Minella! Ahhh!!! Lani has been providing the voice for Nancy ever since our first game: Secrets Can Kill. Of course, since she is so very talented, she has also provided the voice from several other characters in the games, below is a short list:

Freddie Randall from The White Wolf of Icicle Creek
Loulou the parrot from Curse of Blackmoor Manor
Coucou the parrot from Ransom of the Seven Ships
The monster in The Captive Curse
Various voices in Alibi in Ashes around the River Heights map/town
Mille Strathorn in Stay Tuned for Danger
...and many more!

Here is Lani's Interview:

Our third video is about Phoenix. Today was her last day and she wanted to say goodbye and answer a few questions you have asked her. She also provides some inspiring words for you. :')

Goodbye Phoenix, my partner in crime! And good luck with your senior year in college! Stay Sleuthy!

On to your weekend puzzle (this one is only for fun and is not a contest). It contains a tip for inside our next game, The Deadly Device.

"Call Me Nancy, Second Chance Me!"

For those of you who subscribed to our YouTube Channel or noticed our post on our Facebook page or via Twitter...Phoenix uploaded an amazing new video called "Call Me Nancy, Second Chance Me!"

This time it's a music video featuring her and I sporting *cough* super-incredible-skilled dance moves to an un-original song, but with original Nancy Drew-themed lyrics. (You can read these lyrics in the video description). Phoenix wrote these herself (not bad, I say!!) This was what she and I were doing last week, and yes, you may now finally see me... XD

Hope you enjoy this music video, brought to you by Phoenix! Click here to watch it!

Looks like a few of you have solved the puzzle. Congrats! To solve this, you need to look at the [buttons on a phone]. For example 3.2 means [number 3 button, 2nd letter]. Look for each of these to get this answer: [First Tuesday] which refers to [August 7th]. As for the puzzle numbers...

Egg Mystery = Accusations Part 1

First off, it's one of our awesome fans' birthday today! Happy Birthday Zara!

Secondly, Phoenix posted a new video today! She is snooping through the CEO and President's offices. (o.O) What will she find? Will she get caught? And if she does, what will she say? You'll just have to watch now!!

As for the Egg Mystery, the following day I went around and asked all of my usual suspects, and they all had similar reactions to my odd questioning: some had never heard of "egg blowing" and the rest were surprised that I had received a new egg. All except for one.

Although I have no hard evidence, I used the Nancy skill of interrogating suspects to listen carefully for their answers and study their faces. So far only two people have given me enough of a face to where I believe they are the culprit. Our Creative Director, Tim, was correct: there are multiple egg culprits!

Before I explain my thinking, here is what the papers lead to: The song lyrics at the 55 second mark says [I am the eggman]. Take a look at the solved puzzle here:

I therefore accuse the following people for their genius and standing-ovation-worthy skills:

The Chocolate Egg  = I had left late the previous night, therefore there weren't very many (if any) workers left in the office. The following morning I arrived super early, and I checked my drawer right away, finding the chocolate egg (which didn't exist very long, yum). I quickly went around the office to find 6 other people besides me. Three artists, two from production, one IT, and CJ at the front desk. [Tim, our Creative Director] has often suggested multiple culprits, and he had the best opportunity and the most guilty face. But since he has super mad sneaking skills, he could still be innocent yet try to gain the attention as the clever one. (Giving you the credit! Thanks for the most edible egg, and most tastiest one at that!)

The Glass Egg = Ok, this one was already solved, but let's include it to keep track. This appeared mid-day when I was away from my desk. Asking someone nearby proved helpful, as he eye-witnessed [Megan, our President and CCSO] around my desk who then quickly rushed past. When questioned, she confessed that she simply wanted to give it to me because of this egg mystery, and since I was away, what perfect opportunity to place it in the famous drawer!

The Hollowed Egg = Like Nancy Drew, I asked out-right questions to see the suspects' reactions. All but one person seemed surprised. My last suspect to question was in production, and when asked if she knew how to blow eggs, she answered yes. (Check off one point!) She knew very well of the song to which I was referring, in fact, she had the song at her desk (Check off two points). I asked out-right if it was her, and she smiled and said something like "Maybe. It may or may not have been me, I cannot account for my actions yesterday. I will not say." Yep, that doesn't strike me as a puzzled or surprised response. (Her sister verified that white eggs were in their home, that they both knew how to hollow eggs, and were both familiar with the song.) Keeping close attention to her face, I decided that [Cathy, our designer who is good at creating puzzles] is for sure the Hollowed Egg Puzzle culprit. (Bonus points to you for your carefully thought-out work, and sending me in circles!)

Sadly, I do not have answers to all of the other eggs, including the Dozen Eggs. So no one gets credit yet for those.

Hm...I wonder if the Dozen-Egg culprit will strike again, hopefully not with twelve, but maybe one. Yeah, I wasn't really sure what to do with 12 eggs. XD

*Edited* I nearly forgot the weekend puzzle! Actually, I'm not very good at explaining this kind of cipher. The answer is [Right is Higher].

Hacktastic Busy Days!

Where did the day go yesterday? And the post? Yikes, you know what that means? We've been busy! Here's what we've been focusing on:

- Secret meetings about the next game
- Focus groups on puzzles
- The news we launched on Facebook about us doing a Kickstarter campaign!!
- Hacky sack

Oh hacky sack! Remember in last week's post how I mentioned "Fun in the Sun"? Well this is what I was hinting at: Phoenix uploaded a new video to YouTube featuring...what else? Members of the Her Interactive team having fun out in the sun playing hacky sack! Watch it now on our YouTube Channel! (And yes, I am out there too. XD).

As for the weekend puzzle, I suppose I was being a little mean, but I made it tough because there is a little reward to the answer: secret knowledge! The keys are from several games, so if you hadn't played the game, chances are you wouldn't recognize it. But I am proud of you all for helping each other out on the Message Boards here! :D

To solve this, first identify all of the keys by the game they were in.
Answers:
1. [The Creature of Kapu Cave]
2. [Secret of the Old Clock]
3. [Shadow at the Water's Edge]
4. [Ransom of the Seven Ships]
5. [The Captive Curse]
6. [The Haunting of Castle Malloy]
7. [Warnings at Waverly Academy]
8. [Secrets Can Kill Remastered]
9. [Trail of the Twister]
10. [Tomb of the Lost Queen]
11. [Message in a Haunted Mansion]
12. [Treasure in the Royal Tower]
13. [The White Wolf of Icicle Creek]
14. [Alibi in Ashes]
15. [Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake]
16. [Tomb of the Lost Queen]
17. [Danger by Design]
Then count (using the number provided) the letters in that game title to get a letter. Your end answer is this: [Creepy animal in DED].

Nancy Drew Spaces

We have been *cough*purposefully*cough* keeping you in suspense for a few days with the secret YouTube video. Cue evil laughter: Mwahaha! Cut evil moment: The "private" video on intern Phoenix's play list is now viewable! Check out our YouTube channel and subscribe to stay informed on all the latest uploads she adds. ;)

This is my favorite video so far, because it's really cool to see what our office looks like. Although to a non-Nancy Drew fan, it might look just like any other office. There are still tiny secrets around, you would just have to look harder, with keen eyes. The story behind every room and every cubicle and every space is most interesting. Perhaps Phoenix will enlighten you on some while she snoops further.

You also get a sneak peak at my desk in this video. Oh dear! Now you know how much of a Nancy Drew nerd I am... XD The game collection on my top shelf, posters on my wall, the tin on my desk with the Earth's remaining Koko Kringles, a box of crayons and colored pens next to my monitor...*sigh* This cubicle is my Nancy Drew dream space. Although, I think I would love to have a living room designed the same way Nancy's looks like in Alibi in Ashes. It's so homey! That would be the dream space for me.

I would have to put up the coat rack somewhere, the mugs and coasters on the coffee table, along with a magnifying glass and a few Nancy Drew books on some shelves or side tables. That would be amazing.

How would you decorate your space Nancy Drew style? Would it be Nancy Drew memorabilia, or would it look like an environment from a game? Say, Nancy's bedroom in The Captive Curse, or perhaps decorate it like the Wickford Castle in Treasure in the Royal Tower? The artist in me wants to go crazy with all these possibilities...now where's my canvas?

Weekend puzzle answer will be posted tomorrow. For those who are new to these, you do not need to submit your answers, these puzzles are just for fun. But if you'd like, you may discuss them on the Message Boards here.

We have not one, but 2 sales going on this weekend! In honor of Father's Day, we have Secret of the Old Clock available for  25% the digital download, and in celebration of 2012 graduates, we have Warnings at Waverly Academy also for 25% off the digital download.

These are only valid until 11:59 PM PST, Sunday June 17, 2012.

The Waverly Cat will laugh at you if you miss out on this deal:

Want to learn more about the employees in our office? We posted a new interview on our Dare to Play Blog, this time featuring Scott, one of our Character Animators! Who do you think was his favorite character to animate? ;)

Weekend puzzle time! I originally drew this puzzle out with a pen and colored it with crayons (which looked super spiffy), but the computer scanner wasn't picking up the color, so I thought like Sonny Joon, and scrawled a computer sketch...in honor of Phoenix mentioning her distaste of spiders in her last video blog. (>_<)

P2. B1. R1+Y1. B3-G2. P3-Y3. G1. Y3. S3-W2. W3+Y1. R3. O3+O1. O3-R2. O1+W1. O2-B1. R1+G2. O3.
Good luck sleuths!

Game Testing Results

Howdy all! I was out of the office yesterday and that explains the lack of a post. :(

No update to the egg mystery, but we do have some other updates: our new intern, Phoenix, uploaded a new video to her Video Blog series, which can be found on our YouTube channel. Check it out, she gives you a real look at the walk up to the office building. Very cool!

Today we had a meeting to review last week's focus group testing results. Here's a graph created by our Designer on the puzzles that were voted people's favorites. Unfortunately, I can't share with you the puzzle names, so I made up some not-so-creative substitutes as place-holders:

The next step from this meeting is that puzzles have been taken into consideration for further revisions, like making the instructions more clear, and a certain puzzle made harder. My favorite puzzles are sliders and logic puzzles, you know, the ones you really have to think on to solve. ;) I love a good challenge! So my favorite went to the blue category.

Twitter Quote Contest! Enter for a chance to win a guide!

Weekend Puzzle #153 + Exciting Friday!

Boy oh boy, we had a full day today! Busybusybusybusy...but in a very good way. There is a lot to say, so hang tight and don't hold your breathe; it will be a long read. (~.^)

First off, as you may have learned already, we have a new summer intern! Introducing Phoenix! She has a new vlog (video blog) that she will be doing for you each week, sometimes multiple video uploads! Phoenix will be giving you the inside scoop on life as an intern at Her Interactive. Watch her first video here, and stay tuned for more updates! (Better yet, if you subscribe to our YouTube Channel, an email will be sent to you every time there's a new addition.)

We have a new web page on our site at www.herinteractive.com! Are you new to the Nancy Drew world? Is this the first time you are playing the Nancy Drew games? Then hop over to this page and get the scoop on who Nancy is, and read some tips on how to play the games, learn what to expect, and get caught up on the latest going on with the games and at Her Interactive. This guide has a little bit of everything for first time players, so if you know someone who is a fan and is just starting out, direct them to this page, it's a big help. ^.^
Visit the New to Nancy Drew page now!

Check it out! Thank you Silvertongue for sharing this amazing picture with us of her kitty "Jack", or should we say, a littl-er jackalope! (So cute!)

Also, we have a sale going on in honor of Aquarium month! From now until the end of June, you can get Danger on Deception Island (digital only) for 25% off using promo code AQUA2012. If you are missing this title, order now for a little weekend fun!

No news on the egg mystery, at the moment, I am waiting for the culprit to strike again in hopes that my plan for nabbing him/her will work....perhaps another time. (I'm onto you egg culprit, be afraid!)

Now for the Weekend Puzzle! If this is your first time trying to solve a puzzle here on the blog, feel free to discuss your progress and share your solution on the Message Boards, as this week's puzzle is only for fun. Enjoy!
